Illuminated page of music for the Christmas Vespers

This illuminated page of music, created for the Christmas Vespers and part of a bound Medieval manuscript volume, was made by an anonymous Flemish artist around 1290. It features a Nativity scene within the large, historiated capital R.

In some Catholic and Orthodox churches, the Christmas Vespers, also known as the Vespers of the Nativity, are evening prayers sung on the evening of 24 December. They mark the beginning of the joyful celebration of the birth of Christ.
