PAST EXHIBITION: PAINTINGS DISPLAYED IN HONOUR OF MARY TREGEAR

The paintings in this gallery were displayed to commemorate the contribution of Mary Tregear (1924-2010) to the Ashmolean Museum, as Assistant Keeper and then Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art between 1961 and 1991. Miss Tregear was born in China and came to Oxford from a post at Hong Kong University Museum at a time when the Department of Eastern Art was newly established. With great flair and foresight she assisted in building up the collections, particularly in the fields of ceramics and modern paintings, which few museums were then collecting. The works exhibited here include paintings acquired for the Ashmolean by her, a selection of those presented in her honour, and two paintings by the Hong Kong artist Lui Shou-Kwan that she herself bequeathed.
