With Dr Jennifer Sliwka, Keeper of Western Art at the Ashmolean

Hear from Dr Sliwka about the Museum's new acquisition of The Crucifixion by Fra Angelico, and the subsequent rehang in the Early Italian Art Gallery (level 2) at the end of 2024.

One of the earliest surviving panel paintings by Fra Angelico, this work depicts a subject he painted throughout his career and which he allegedly never painted without tears streaming down his cheeks. The panel was discovered in a private UK collection and only correctly re-attributed to the master in the 1990s.

Fra Angelico's Crucifixion on display in gallery

The Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist and the Magdalen by Fra Angelico, early 1420s, tempera on panel. The painting retains its original engaged frame and is hung in the Early Italian Art Gallery 42

The Ashmolean was successful in its major fundraising campaign last year to acquire this masterpiece. Find out more
